(Pedxingismo S03 : Ep.01)
The sullied relationship between sports and geopolitics is evident in the developments in the world of tennis. Despite Russian and Belarusian players openly voicing their opposition to the Ukraine conflict, they were banned from playing at Wimbledon in 2022. The ban, born out of paranoia, was based on fears that if Russian and Belarusian players won, Putin could exploit the event for propaganda purposes. Nevertheless, a Russian-born Kazakh player won the Wimbledon Women’s Championship.
At other tournaments, Russian and Belarusian players are allowed to play but are denied their national flags as identity and representation, euphemistically labeled as “neutrality”. Adding insult to injury, they are also subjected to unsportsmanlike acts on the court, with Ukrainian players displaying utter disrespect, arrogance, and chauvinism towards their Russian or Belarusian opponents by denying them the customary handshake during matches. Despite this, tennis officials remain silent on the matter.
These acts highlight hypocrisy and a double standard in both politics and sports. While sanctions are openly imposed on Russians and Belarusian players for Russia’s atrocities in the Ukraine conflict, tennis and other sports governing bodies remain silent on players whose countries are actively supporting Israel’s blatant atrocities against the Palestinian people.
